vanityfair: Where the Wild Things Are author Maurice Sendak, age 83, as profiled for us by Dave Eggers.
We love this arresting, Grimm’s-colorplate of a portrait, don’t you?

E. B. White, On His Eighteenth Birthday
Eighteen, and still no future! I’d be more contended in prison, for there at least I would know precisely what I had to look forward to.
Authors who make book trailers are a rather silly bunch.
“This is a great day for illiterate authors,” Shteyngart said. “From Snooki, to Nicole Richie, to me. I prepared a speech, but I can’t read. USA!”
Gary Shteyngart is a seriously funny man and an incredible author, IMO.
God Bless You, Dr. Kevorkian

Of course that title is not directly reflective of my view of Kevorkian (I never say “God Bless”) but it is the title of a Kurt Vonnegut collection of short fictional interviews that originally aired on NPR.
And in light of Dr. Kevorkian’s passing today I think it’s an appropriate reading recommendation.
As for the man himself, he was a advocate for the rights of those terminally ill and helped shine an important spotlight on their plight.
10 Essential Books for Thought-Provoking Summer Reading
All of these sound wonderful but I think I’ll definitely go out of my way to try and read:
- The Information: A History, A Theory, A Flood
- Radioactive
- God Bless You, Dr. Kevorkian
Vladimir Putin’s Reading List
“I have always loved and avidly read the novels of Jack London, Jules Verne and Ernest Hemingway. The characters depicted in their books, who are brave and resourceful people embarking on exciting adventures, definitely shaped my inner self and nourished my love for the outdoors.”
Vladimir asked for a geography lesson as the tram rocked them back and forth on its journey across the Tavlata, heaving them into the neatly groomed old-timers who were entitled to their tram seats by law and derived a great, silent pleasure from watching the two standing foreigners tumble to their knees.
Sounds familiar.
